About

Over several decades, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing book clubs with a variety of populations. However, my greatest joy was developing a mother daughter book club with my daughter. This was always a dream I had and when it became a reality, it was thrilling beyond words. The “conversational magic” of my own mother daughter book group and that of the groups I have helped to form and sustain continues to amaze me.

Book clubs form a deep and lasting bond between mothers and daughters. Talking about books together enables mothers and daughters to gain insight into and understand each other. The discussions begin as conversations about the challenges or conflicts of characters in the books but inevitably shift to discussions about similar problems the girls are experiencing. A book may also address topics that would never come up in everyday life but in the context of the book club, it is natural and safe to talk about them; it doesn’t seem as personal. The girls get to hear both each other’s opinions and those of all the mothers in the group. In addition, it becomes a “safe haven” where mothers and daughters can have true conversations that are not about homework, cleaning their rooms or picking up wet towels...

Girls also become more adept at being able to critically analyze literature and express their opinions. Reading different types of books that they themselves might not have chosen helps girls extend their reading, knowledge of the world and other cultures. Stories make topics come alive that might otherwise be boring.

Girls also gain self confidence because both their peers and other adults are listening to and sincerely interested in what they have to say. They learn to be both respectful of others opinions, politely disagree and yet be assertive in their own viewpoint. In addition, they learn to provide evidence for their ideas about characters, plot or writing style. They make connections to their everyday lives and thoughts which often bridge time or country. In addition, we can expose our girls to a variety of issues so that what they are reading comes from something other than the popular media.

We are also modeling that reading can be part of a fun social activity.

Join me and many other mothers and daughters around the globe. Begin a mother daughter book club of your own and begin a special journey with your daughter. You will get to know each other as you take travel into other lives, other eras and other places in a group with other mothers and daughters. I promise you it will be a trip to last a lifetime.
